McCarthy made lots of promises on his way to be Speaker. Now the promises are in the wind. Change is coming.
- His Promise: Save the Trump Tax Cuts, protect Social Security, and deliver a 10-year balanced budget; no cuts to Medicare, defense spending, and vets’ pensions.
- The Non-Partisan Congressional Budget Office has run the numbers. McCarthy keeping his promise means that Republicans would have to eliminate essentially everything else:
- No Homeland Security
- No Border Patrol or FBI
- No Coast Guard
- No air traffic control
- No $$$ for education or highways
- No agricultural programs
- No food, housing, or disaster assistance
- No veterans’ healthcare
- No cancer research
- No diplomacy
- No space exploration
- And NO! Congress.
House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington (R-TX) now calls the 10-year budget proposal “aspirational.”
