Ousted McCarthy says he “Will leave the House but not the fight!” With Santos expelled, McCarthy’s plan to exit before the close of 2023 leaves Republicans two votes fewer since New York Governor Kathy Hochul has set a date for the Congressional election to replace Santos for February 13. California Governor Newsome is unlikely to select a date to replace McCarthy until after McCarthy’s exact resignation date is determined.
National Journal reports that both parties will fight over the Santos seat. The race is likely to be the most expensive House race.
