Time to be SERIOUS about VOTING RIGHTS

By November 29, 2023No Comments

The House and the Senate have returned;  hopefully, the House will pass the funding bills they should have passed months ago.  The President and bipartisan leadership from both Houses agreed to these budget bills earlier this year, but now, we’ve got the folks who want to break their word.  MY RURAL AMERICA will report on who’s responsible and whose words are weaker than a bowl of jello as things progress.  But first, let’s look ahead to voting rights.  These same “jello” folks who break their word regularly in Congress and at home with their constituents appear to be committed to shutting down government … yes, again!  Most of them also are determined to make it harder for people to vote.

Democracy Docket‘s author, Devon Hasano, nails it in this article.  It’s just the facts, no fluff, and we share it as a reminder that some Members of Congress need to be replaced.  These Members regularly fail their constituents and do not believe in democracy or the U.S. Constitution’s responsibility to protect our democracy.  The way to get started on this necessary task is to make sure our elections are honest, and our eligible citizens are not denied their right to vote.

Debunking Democracy Myths This Holiday Season

Devon Hasano, Democracy Docket

“FACT: Photo IDs are a needless barrier to voting that disproportionately burden marginalized groups.

“MYTH: Government-issued photo IDs are easy to obtain and prevent widespread election fraud.

“FACT: Hand counting can be helpful to confirm electronic counts but is inefficient, expensive, and ripe for inaccuracies as a primary counting method.

“MYTH: Hand counting is a safe and efficient method to tally all election results.

“FACT: U.S. elections are chronically underfunded, and private funding for election administration can help to alleviate this issue.  No evidence suggests private funding helps Democrats more than Republicans.

“MYTH: Private funding for elections makes them less secure and improperly helps Democrats win.

“FACT: It is unconstitutional for noncitizens to vote in federal elections.  Minuscule examples exist of noncitizens illegally voting.

“MYTH: Democrats are allowing noncitizens to vote in federal elections, leading to fraud.

“FACT: Redistricting can take place at any time as a result of litigation and legislation.

“MYTH: Redistricting is a once-in-a-decade process that only deserves attention following the release of U.S. census data.”
