Jordan drops out; Republicans still can’t govern

By October 21, 2023No Comments

Washington — House Republicans voted to drop Rep. Jim Jordan as their nominee for Speaker after he failed to win a majority three times this week, sending the party back to the drawing board and leaving the House leaderless for at least three more days. …”

No votes for Speaker are expected until at least Tuesday, October 24.  It’s been more than two weeks since Republicans forced out McCarthy, but mostly, there has been chaos.  For rural families, if Jordan had won the Speakership, it would likely have made life particularly difficult since Jordan has consistently opposed Farm Bills for 16 years and has repeatedly tried to cut back Social Security.

Going without a Speaker rarely happens, and until now, when there was a vacancy, it happened when the House was not in Session.  The Acting Speaker is prohibited from holding votes for anything other than having voted for the Speaker, but the Republicans who re-called McCarthy cannot agree on who the Speaker should be.
