MY RURAL AMERICA celebrates the 4th of July’s freedoms for everyone, but not everyone was free on July 4, 1776. Enslaved people were emancipated on June 19, 1865. Still, given the recent Supreme Court rulings, the Majority votes seem to be taking us back farther and farther from our vision of freedom for everyone. As we all enjoy the fireworks tonight, it would be suitable for each of us to take a moment to consider how much better it would be if everyone here and worldwide had opportunities to appreciate freedom and equality.
