Should Legislatures tell Banks How to Invest?

Preview:  North Dakota lawmakers gave a big “NO!” to the idea that banks should be told what to invest in.  Republican stronghold state lawmakers in Indiana, Mississippi, and Kentucky agree, having each recently defeated proposals prohibiting state governments or pension funds from doing business “with big financial institutions that have adopted ESG,” i.e., policies that include goals affecting environmental, social, and governance.
