The last thing rural communities need is less access to unbiased information. Rural communities already suffer from heavily one-sided, far-right information streams. The loss of journalists willing to report on issues actually affecting their communities is likely to drive rural residents further towards conspiracy theories and misinformation.

Al Cross is director of the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues, based at the University of Kentucky, and an associate professor in the university’s School of Journalism and Telecommunications. Al began his journalism career at WANY and the Clinton County News in his hometown of Albany, Ky., and was a weekly newspaper editor and manager before reporting for The Courier-Journal for 26 years, the last 15½ as chief political writer. He continues to write a twice-monthly political column for the Louisville newspaper and appear on KET’s election coverage.
