Madame Speaker Nancy Pelosi

“Homemaker to Speaker”

Speaker Pelosi announced today that she would not run again for Speaker.  Our country and the world will miss her.  She worked with three presidents to accomplish an impressive list of legislation, including:

  • Clean Energy with George W. Bush
  • Health Care Reform with Barack Obama
  • Infrastructure, Health Care, and Climate Action with President Joe Biden.

I urge you to listen thoughtfully to Speaker Pelosi’s last speech.  Although in my heart, she will always be  “Nancy” to me because I have been friends with her for a very long time, I applaud her for how every single day she earned and re-earned the title of “Madame Speaker” and all the respect that goes with the tile.  She has served as the first woman to become “Speaker” for 19 years.

Today, there is also a back story that begins with the question:  Who in the House was missing from the audience during Speaker Pelosi’s speech?

Ahhh.  Did you guess Kevin McCarthy?  If so, you were right.

Now, another question:  Why wasn’t he there?  Rumor has it that the Freedom Caucus threatened  McCarthy that if he did, the Caucus would withhold their votes for McCarthy, who desperately wants to be the new Speaker.

The threat played out in part because former president Trump directed the Caucus to deliver the threat. Numerous Freedom Caucus members also failed to attend.

I have to ask:  What kind of Speaker will McCarthy be when he is under the thumb of Trump?
