Sean Kennedy is the founder of Megawatt Photovoltaic Development, Inc (Megawatt) and the developer of the Johnson County Solar Triangle, one of Iowa’s largest solar energy projects. As the managing partner at Megawatt, Kennedy oversees strategic planning, business development, government relations, and creating a network of partnerships in the energy sector. Kennedy previously served at the US Department of Energy as a political appointee in the Clinton Administration. During those eight years, he served on the senior staff of the Secretary of Energy and was deeply involved in the Secretary’s priority effort to promote renewable energy as a solution to climate change. Kennedy was a coordinator of the first White House Climate Change Conference in 1997. Prior to founding Megawatt, Kennedy worked in Eastern Europe as the managing partner of Summit International Relations. After leaving the Department of Energy in 2001, Kennedy founded and directed a public relations firm that worked with nationally-known elected officials and non-profit organizations. The primary focus of the company was directing media campaigns, providing media technology, and organizing issue-driven projects. Kennedy has more than 35 years of political and campaign experience, beginning with the 1984 campaign cycle in Iowa, his home state. He has worked on or consulted for various presidential campaigns. While at the University of Iowa, Kennedy earned a bachelor’s of science and master’s of science in Geology. His Master’s research focused on geology in the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness Area of Northern Colorado. As a student and after the completion of his degrees, Kennedy worked as an exploration and groundwater geologist.
