Infant Mortality Rises 8.3% in Texas

By June 26, 2024No Comments

Since the Supreme Court eliminated women’s right to choose their healthcare, infant mortality has gone up 8.3% in Texas.  This compares with +2.3% nationally.   Texas research on rates also identified a 12.9% increase in the deaths of babies under age one.

Texas law prohibits abortions after the detection of a fetus’ heartbeat.  No exceptions are allowed other than possible medical emergencies.  Infant deaths from fetal abnormalities have risen by 22.9% in Texas since the Court ended ROE, and with it, 50 years of women’s rights to decide their own health care.

It must be noted that even though Texas law technically allows exceptions for medical emergencies, the practical need to find a doctor  (while the emergency is ongoing) to diagnose that emergency for women to qualify for an abortion is practically impossible.  Doctors are afraid they will be sued should they risk this diagnosis.
