Remember Representative Adam Kinzinger from Illinois? He was one of the rare Republicans who voted to impeach then-President Trump in the January 6th hearings. We applauded him then, and we applaud him now. The following is part of his comments on the 34 felony count conviction of Donald Trump today:
“It is a sad day for our nation . . . If we worry about our standing in the world—and we should—this isn’t a point of pride. Despite this verdict, America still looks like so many struggling democracies, where strongmen violate laws and bend the system to their will. The anti-Trump coalition, this uneasy and awkward alliance, must stand together, united to defend the sanctity of our system and the presidency.“
We at MY RURAL AMERICA are also worried about our standing in the world. We are stronger when we are respected. Before WWII, A lot of people thought we were safe because the ocean separated us from all the trauma, and then we learned we weren’t. The world is smaller now, and we need robust and well-respected leadership more than ever. This is to share some comments from “across the pond.”
From the BBC:
“It’s a political powder keg. There’s a saying about the damage from political scandals that dates back to the Richard Nixon Watergate imbroglio: ‘It’s not the crime, it’s the cover-up.’ In Trump’s case, however, the crime was the cover-up.”
From Reuters:
BRITISH OPPOSITION LABOUR PARTY LEADER KEIR STARMER: “First and foremost, we respect the court’s decision in relation to the decision in the Trump case. There’s sentencing still to go and possible appeal, but we respect the court process.
KREMLIN SPOKESMAN DMITRY PESKOV: “If we speak about Trump, the fact that there is simply the elimination, in effect, of political rivals by all possible means, legal and illegal, is obvious.“
