FARM BILL MARK-UP: Thursday, May 23 — 11AM EST

By May 22, 2024No Comments

This is House AG Chairman Thompson’s (R-PA) version.  Watch it live.  Areas of concern:

How our food is being grown: Remember that updated growing practices and, in some cases, a change in crops are necessary for our farmers to combat climate change.  Avoiding chemicals will help the depleted soil recover.

Will kids go hungry?  Is the Farm Bill stingy on food for kids?  Note — what happens to summer feeding programs?  Will school lunch be redesigned to shame the poor kids before they are allowed to eat?

Crop Insurance?  It is a vital program for keeping farmers in business, but each insurance program’s risk must be updated regularly. When will the Risk Management Agency be required to hire experienced economists?  Is the education/sales and marketing accurate about how “whole farm” and “index” insurances really work?

Check the boxes:  Conservation. Climate Change.  Rural Development.  Hunger.  Markets.  New Markets.  Family farmers’ needs prioritized over corporate agriculture’s.
