Well, maybe not. The Senate has struck a deal that could make a big difference. Senator James Lankford (R-OK) led negotiations.
The problem? Republicans don’t know whether they want to solve the problem. They do like complaining about the many refugees coming through the border.
What we don’t know is whether they will support any solutions.
- Republicans declared the border was a crisis — all the Democrats’ fault, and Democrats must fix it!
- Speaker Mike Johnson said, “We have a catastrophe at our Southern border.”
- Trump intervened … and commanded, “…any Republican that signs the Senate’s yet-to-be-released bipartisan border deal should be ashamed.
- Johnson replied, “I am calling the shots!”
- Well, maybe.
Trump wants the bill to fail. Why? In Trump’s words, “A border deal now would be another gift to the radical left Democrats.”
Who’s in charge? A four-times-indicted ex-president? The House Speaker? Secessionist Marjorie Taylor Green? Oh, please not.
We send kudos to Republican James Lankford, who did the responsible thing, found the sweet spot, and crafted a bill to bring profound change to the border that his committee, thinking Republicans, The White House, and Democrats, can agree about.
According to The Hill, “The ambitious set of reforms included in the deal is designed to give Customs and Border Patrol agents “operational control” of the border by speeding up the adjudication of asylum claims and giving President Biden and future presidents authority to shut down the border if daily crossing average more than 4,000.” See below for details.
