Happy Thanksgiving!

By November 28, 2024No Comments

Let us bow our heads this Thanksgiving and be grateful that we have turkey plus all the trimmings on our plates to enjoy.

We must remember that many people are not as lucky as those who read MY RURAL AMERICA’s news and opinion.

What our farmers do is feed the world.  Not everyone can afford the turkey and a piece of pie.  For almost two years, House Republicans have held up the Farm Bill.  It expired on September 30, 2023.  Since then, funding has been patched together but not seen as a serious plan — how to feed hungry people, keep farmers in business, and treasure our land so that it can continue to produce bountiful amounts of food and commodities.  The House Republican majority has blocked the bill because they want to eliminate 20% of the funding dedicated to alleviating hunger.  Democrats disagree.

Project 2025, created by the hard-right Heritage Foundation, was first denied by Donald Trump as a candidate and is now embraced by him as president-elect. It calls for eliminating the Farm Bill.  The writers of Project 2025 must be dancing with happiness now.

MY RURAL AMERICA is not happy.  Here, we believe in the future.  We know that kids must have full stomachs before they can learn.  We know countries become unstable when their leadership allows their people to starve.  We know that stable food supplies cannot be grown if the land needs to be renewed.

So, as we bow our heads, please remember that President-elect Trump’s plans to let people go hungry and to refuse the new regenerative growing practices that will restore our land, are unacceptable.  We will need to let our Senators know.

This Thanksgiving, remember that some of our American “family,” through no fault of their own, need our help to enjoy Thanksgiving turkey and other reliable hot meals daily. Let us remember the poor need our help and that it isn’t our role to judge why they need help.  Hunger must be met with food.
