“OVER THE LAST WEEK, a conspiracy theory caught fire on the American right that was so quickly disprovable that it’s worth taking the time to name and shame the people who spread it or otherwise abetted it, whether out of malice, stupidity, or sheer tinfoil-hat lunacy.
“The rumor’s crux: President Joe Biden was dead or dying. …” Cathy Young, The Bulwark’s author of the above, wrote as she explained the craziness of this conspiracy theory.
The theory is a perfect example of MY RURAL AMERICA’S most recent report on Ridiculous Conspiracy Stories, which was published earlier in this space. It ranks right up there with “The moon is full of cheese” and “Astronauts never walked on the moon.”
In this case, the conspiracy seems to have started by Congressman Chip Roy (R-TX), who asked the question in a tweet that kicked off the race for how to bring new meaning to crazy. Then came Lauren Boebert (R-CO), who demanded “proof of life by 5 Pm” from Mr. Biden. And then came the trolls.
Dare we say, “Stupid does as stupid is.”
