Paradox–a statement or proposition that, despite sound (or apparently sound) reasoning from acceptable premises, leads to an illogical, unacceptable conclusion.
Yesterday, we wrote about Juneteenth and the paradox of Gabriel Duvall, owner of Marietta Plantation. Duvall owned enslaved people and fought to keep them enslaved and, at the same time, was an attorney who represented Blacks fighting for their freedom.
Now, here in the U.S., we have different varieties of PARADOXES, e.g.,
- Abortion: Can anyone be “Pro-Family” or “Pro-life” when they are against IVF, against Medicare, against Medicaid, and against the Affordable Healthcare Act? This is the position owned by almost all Republicans in the House and Senate.
- Immigration: Established Americans need immigrants to work on farms, to be au pairs for our children, to work on repairing our bridges, and more. Remember the six immigrant workers who died repairing the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore when it collapsed after the huge ship struck it.
- On the other hand, we have Donald Trump raving about how bad immigrants are for our country while immigrants built our country.
- Gabriel Duvall, owner of the Marietta Plantation in Maryland, was the great-grandson of an immigrant from France. I am the great-granddaughter of an immigrant who escaped hunger and poverty in Limerick, Ireland. Every U.S. citizen, or their ancestors, comes here from somewhere, except for Native Americans.
- Infrastructure: Only 13 Republicans in the House and 19 Republican Senators voted for President Biden’s Bi-Partisan Infrastructure Bill.
- But most no-voting Senators and House Members are now proudly pointing to new infrastructure projects in their home states—taking credit, using “I” words to take credit. They say, “I did this,” or “I voted for this,” or otherwise claim credit, cutting ribbons, or making announcements of new projects, but NO, they did NOT support infrastructure investments. Republicans Are Taking Credit for Infrastructure Bill They All Voted Against
- These same no-voting Senators and House Members supported infrastructure investments when Donald Trump was president, but Trump couldn’t get it done. Biden did
- The IDIOCY of being against things because someone else is for them. See Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) as an example.
- She joined Republican Senators J.D. Vance of Ohio, Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, Eric Schmitt of Missouri, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Rick Scott of Florida, Roger Marshall of Kansas, Marco Rubio of Florida, Josh Hawley of Missouri, and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. These members fail to represent their states’ best interests and should resign.
