President Trump, who had lost the election, deliberately held the rally and asked the attendees to go to the Hill. Many of the attendees came prepared with weapons — bear spray, stun guns, pepper spray, baseball bats, and flag polls to be used as weapons. Trump promised to go with them, but instead, he returned to the White House and rooted for them while watching the attack on television.
Police died. The Capitol’s windows were broken, and some artifacts were stolen or broken. Bombs were left at both the Republican and Democratic headquarters. As one policeman described the attack later, “It was a bloody mess!”
