Farm Action’s recommendations can be divided into two pillars:
- “Leveling the Playin Field”
- “Rebuilding a Food System that Benefits All”
Overall, the plan acts as a guide “to fighting monopoly power and building fair, competitive markets.” The full platform can be read at Farm Action Fund – Food and agriculture policy platform for candidates, written by farmers for farmers
Although MY RURAL AMERICA is not expected to endorse this platform or others on a detail-by-detail basis formally, our team agrees that (1) the general intent of working toward a level playing field for family farmers is an excellent, much-needed goal that will benefit farmers and consumers, and (2) our food system drastically needs re-building with more emphasis on local and regional producers, adapting crops to the changing demands of climate change, and a general push-back toward corporations whose “food” products are often over-processed and full of fillers and preservation chemicals.
Noting that the Farm Bill expired months ago, and House Republicans still have not written a draft bill. This is another proof of failed governing. The Bill has not been extended. We encourage readers to contact their Congressmen to demand attention to the Farm Bill and to encourage them to pay attention to this platform.
