Right-wing Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla. told his fellow Republicans last week there are seven Republicans who will not vote to fund the government … PERIOD! This handful of right-wingers is holding the federal government hostage. To stop their — dare I say treasonous activity? Some brave Republicans must join Democrats in voting to continue funding the Federal Government and its vital programs.
Right-wing Republican VA Congressman Bob Good is one of them, saying, “Most of what Congress does is not good for the American people.” Good’s 5th District is where Thomas Jefferson once lived. James Madison was the region’s first congressman.
A quick snapshot of federal spending in Good’s District includes:
- 190,285 people in the District receive Social Security. 142,235 of them are retired. The others are widows, disabled, spouses, or children.
- 180,221 people are eligible for Medicare …28% of the 5th District’s population.
- 186,915 5th District residents are enrolled in Medicaid — 23.8% of the population. Close to half of either children (69,244) or blind (16, 351).
- 44,661 people are Military Veterans receiving military benefits.
- Federal $$$$$ for Infrastructure: Based on formula funding alone, Virginia is expected to receive approximately $7.6 billion over five years in federal funding for highways and bridges. Highway formula funding and $115 million in dedicated funding for bridges in 2022.
Apparently, Bob Good opposes every one of the programs above as “not good for Virginia.” Or, maybe he’s just asleep at the switch — totally missing the fact that Congress votes on every one of the programs above — votes for them, and funds them.
What would Virginians’ lives be like without these programs? These are the programs Bob Good believes are worthless … Virginians don’t need them, nor does any other American.
Good is ready to shut down the federal government to prove his point.
Monday – 6 days to go! Tuesday – 5 days to go! Wednesday – 4 days to go! Thursday – 3 days to go!, Friday – 2 days to go! Saturday — Last day for Republicans and Democrats to work together to agree to fund the government, or …
KABOOM!!
Will right-wing Republican Congressmen like Virginia’s Bob Good win their fight to shut down the government?
Or will common sense prevail? … with a few traditional Republicans joining Democrats to keep the government open?
These are good questions. Our democracy depends upon people working together.
