Farmers get 14.3 cents for every dollar we spend on food. Off-farm costs, including marketing, processing, wholesaling, distribution, and retailing, account for over 80 cents of every food dollar spent in the United States. Oh yeah … remember to add corporate food industry profits to this list.
For example, a farmer only gets 83 cents for a pound of bacon at $6.99, while a farmer gets 20 cents for a two-pound loaf of bread and only seven cents for the food that goes into a can of beer.
